I got off at Canal and checked Opening Ceremony. Saw some nice Schneider pieces in large sizes, some few Ervell, some nice N. Hollywood and nothing really amazing after that. I wish they still stock Lad Musician. Anyway, Jil Sander was closed so that was a no go. I think this is my third time going to APC this week and I think it was about time I should get at least something. Almost bought a slim tie only to be told "they might not have it anymore". Ugh! I check the website when I got home and they have the other colors in stock. God damn APC fix your online inventory. Uniqlo didn't have any corduroy shirts left and Supreme is sold out of crewnecks -_- Ended up buying magazines instead :)

Back in 2003, I spent shitload of time listening to Hip Hop, from Wu Tang to Pharcyde but one group that stood out from my enormous list is Binary Star. I rarely meet anyone who knows them and I waited 7 years to see them play but unfortunate events happen. One Be Lo the other half of Binary Star still made me realize how much I love Hip Hop. Showing true dedication of rhymes and skills, reminding me that Hip Hop is not all about parties and dollars like we see now on TV. As for the rest of show, Pigeon John and Donny Goiness played awesome sets. Quite two unique style but definitely hip hop.

I finally had the time to trek Brooklyn, had to put em Red Wing jawnz, left NJ and took the L train to Bedford Ave. It's been ages since I took the L train, what a weird feeling. Anyway, I was so excited to finally see Ceremony. It seems I'm terrible at keeping up with calendar dates, luckily I didn't miss them this time. What better way to see them with fellow shoegazer and Virginia natives, Screen Vinyl Image. This is the second time I've seen SVI. Playing with the original line up, Jake and Kim kept strumming those airy dissonant sounds with a loop of discotheque electro beats. What else impresses me about SVI, besides their upbeat yet dark sound is the enormous selection of effect and pedals they use. Clearly I wrote "use" and not just a big rig of stompers for show. Anyway, how fun it would be to play all those crazy sounds, right? I feel like button smashing or rather pedal stomping some right now. Continuing the pedal stomping and shoegaze-esque sounds, Ceremony, 2/3 of former band Skywave, played dreamy noise songs that without doubt reminds you that JAMC is somehow still alive. I do think that Ceremony have more a distinct pop sound on their record and that is something that made me play their records the whole night. Having seen both great shoegaze bands it reminds me that people should not end their ears at MBV.
Big thanks to John for giving me a free copy of Disappear. Never Love Again and Cold Cold Night are awesome tracks. Please do watch out for their new record coming out soon.

NJ Medical Marijuana Makes Drug Dealers Paranoid

In New Jersey medical marijuana is going to be selling for $125 per ounce. An OUNCE! Drug dealers in NYC who were willing to talk to the Daily News sell an ounce for $500. What is this strange glaucoma-y feeling that's coming over us? And why is it coupled with a desire to move to Jersey City?

Drug dealers and conservatives are worried that people will be taking the train across the Hudson to by pot from people who are dying of cancer. You know, because when you're dying of cancer the first thing you want to do is sell your medicine.

Dealers are worried that they can't compete with such low prices (a weed "public option") and one speculated that lowering costs would cost him hundreds of thousands of dollars, which would be just awful -- how will he keep himself in oversize, diamond-encrusted watches and pit bull farms?

The New York Assembly passed medical marijuana legislation in 2007 and 2008, but it has yet to reach the Senate floor. Hurry up already -- we don't want to go to Hoboken!

I went to the Yohji store in Soho a few weeks ago with the gf knowing they had a 80% sale. I tried on a pair of women's ballet flats, convincing myself that they could fit, only to find out the biggest size they made were a size 7. Ermie picked a Limi Feu cardigan but wasn't convince enough that she would wear it. We left empty handed, saying a friendly goodbye and thank you to the SA, only to find out the next day that the was the last time we will be there. I thought it was appropriate to post a photo of Yohji and the people around him from Wim Wender's "Notebook and Cities and Clothes". I know it's more than 20 years ago but it makes you realize that there are other people behind the clothes, especially during this tough times.

Frankie Rose and the Outs played their first official show at The Woodser, an apartment next to the southside of Williamsburg bridge. Other bands sharing the same space included, Hot Box, Air Waves and Grass Widow.

Hot Box girl's were rocking out with matching outfits and I thought they were going to the disco. With too many bands of the same name I actually thought they are dudes. The vocals/guitars was head banging and throwing her head off to their songs. Girls rock! Air Waves' Nicole blew her amp before they even started and had to borrow one of the other bands amp which threw their sound off a bit. Nevertheless you can't be bored when Air Waves play. Frankie Rose and the Outs were in all black sexy outfits setting up their 5 piece orchestra with several box of effects. There is nothing wrong waiting for bands to set up their equipment, especially if you got a 5 piece band but it's disappointing when they play about 5 songs or less. Considering the time you waited and how long they played, you know what I mean. Hopefully those pedals will soon be put to some good use.
Grass Widow from SF are awesome although it can be tad bit annoying when you have some girl going crazy next to you. The first thing I notice about Grass Widow is their drum beats. I love how fast the beat is and how Lillian consistently hit the skins. They make good used of the lahhhhhhhhhh, lah lah, and ahhhhh without making you fall asleep.

They probably be associated with bands like The Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine but Screen Vinyl Image is more than fuzz guitars and loud music. Former members of Alcian Blue, Jake and Kim Reid together with drummer Nathan Jurgenson mix together electro, psychedelic and dakrwave esque shoegaze via synths, drum samples, and wide collection of effect pedals. My ears didn't bleed but SVI's noisy guitars, drum beats and strobe lights is a short trip to a tone down haunted frenzy like banging my head like I'm in the 90's.

Anyway, I had a short conversation with Jake, who is by the way the one of the nicest guys I've met in a while, about 90's band like Slowdive and Ride, their possible US tour with Ceremony and why they are missing a smoke machine. Their next show in NYC is on September 10 at Public Assembly and then a tour with Ceremony in Japan.

Please do check my favorite track from them called "Fever", which reminds me of Danse Society's "Somewhere".

Real Estate fascination with beaches, water, underwater, pools, swimmers, lakes, and beverages is a good relief from the summer heat (but not enough from the heatwave at Death by Audio). It seems I was the only one really into them in the show, that kinda feeling the people next to you were there to see Vivian Girls. Anyway, I kinda knew they were going somewhere when I first saw them play at Maxwell's, now they are all over the place.

So I missed taking pictures of the other bands, well there's probably 87 people who took photos of Vivian Girls last night, so I will probably steal them on Flickr. The night was pretty much sweaty and crowded. Death by Audio sold out? What??????? Why??? Obviously...

I don't remember Teengirl Fantasy playing Azz Klapz Customize It, maybe I was too distracted by the emptiness of the space. I'm watching Top Chef and staring at Padma Lakshmi's breast almost coming out from her red dress, so my memory of their set is blurrier than ever. They did make a great opener for Dinowalrus, Cale Parks and Lemonade. I would actually have preferred Cale Parks played first. The drums was too much for me.

It seems the bill was for dance tunes and beats, so it felt a tad bit weird having Dinowalrus on the bill. As Kyle mentioned, they weren't in Brooklyn, the crowd probably never heard of them. But they were great and sounded so much better with Santo's sound system. Anyway Lemonade killed it. Yes, I wrote "killed it" because of my lack of a better word. They mix dubstep, electro, jungle, reggae,latin percussion?, drum and bass, etc. I suggest checking out their track "Blissout". The vocals of the track reminds me of Mottaka by Queso and smoking a spliff :)

Pick up High Fashion Magazine on the women's mag section of Sanseido Bookstore a couple of weeks ago. This is actually the 1st time I bought the magazine and I highly recommend getting one unless you know any scans available. The issue was about Tokyo men's fashion, so there are couple of articles about well known labels and their expertise towards the scene. E.g. Julius for lamb leathers, KKA for cotton jersey, Undercover for tech fabrics and etc.

Yohji Yamamoto SS08 Red Contrasting Stripe Shirt

Shirts are usually too boring or traditional but Yohji made this piece from Spring/Summer 2007-2008 collection that caught my eyes in red and awe. It is minimalist and edgy without being black. The red and ivory reminds me of the movie Dolls by Takeshi Kitano. This is no surprise since Yohji was the costume designer for the movie.

Jun Takahashi is probably one of my favorite designers ever since I saw "But Beautiful V Guruguru". Unfortunately, I can never wear women's clothes nor I'm not a big fan of streetwear (don't mention I own a Supreme cap), so I never owned any pieces from Undercover until recently. The knit blazer coat from FW07 blew me away, so this is how the addiction started. I'm still looking for the hooded blazer.

I wish I am e-famous so I can be next to Jun Takahashi. I was going over some videos of Jun on Youtube and I came across a video of him with BryanBoy in Tokyo. Do you like GI Joe and Zombies? Well if you do you checkout the music video of the dudes from Zombie Zombie, French duo Etienne Jaumet and Cosmic Neman.

Driving This Road Until Death Sets You Free is sick. The horror dark synth of like getting eaten slowly by Zombies and the laid back drums makes you feel like it's okay to be eaten slowly then turn into a mindless reanimated walking corpse. The video of the song, which is a stop motion of GI Joe figures and Zombies is brilliant. GI Joe's turning into zombies, blood, GI Joe's chopping off GI Joe zombies, definitely epic.

I don't know how long I have waited for them to come over to New York but alas, the wait is over and done. Zombie Zombie is great both live and on the record. My only concern is that the record outdo the live set but in fairness to the dudes, reproducing tracks from the record with so much tech stuff is a bitch, so they are cool in ma book.

What can I say about Apache Beat? Well Ilirjana Alushaj dancing in the video of Tropics is stuck in my head. The drums and Ilirjana dancing are good enough reasons for me why they are called Apache Beat.

This band actually deserves more attention bec:

05.01.09 A Place to Bury Strangers, Dinowalrus & Cash Diet Crew @ Less Artist More Condos

- a failed attempt of recreating the intro of "Don't Think Lover"

They are noisy and they have a long name. A Place to Bury Strangers have provided some ear bending noise for the night. Several stacks of Fender amps provided of course by the band and amazing pedal set up by who else, Oliver Ackermann (DBA) are definitely no excuse for bitches to complain. The set-up itself is pretty damn solid considering the four corners of LAMC. APTBS delivered great noise as usual. The song selection was pretty much straight forward, nothing slow like "Don't Think Lover", which was a bit of a disappointment. Anyway everything was well provided, so if you did not rock yourself at this show you suck.

Cash Diet Crew are cool. I love how the drums nailed the notes on the guitars and the keys. Maybe they have this certain chemistry that just flows naturally with psychedelic tunes. One thing they need to do is to come out with a record or maybe I just have to listen to their live set from WMFU again.

Dinowalrus is a band I've seen so many times, so I thought I won't really be surprised. Well I'm wrong, enough said. Besides that their 7" is out and are coming out with a full record.

Guy from M2M Mart(Chris?): Let's Wrestle is good.
Me: Oh yeah, they're playing tomorrow night at Maxwell's.

Let's Wrestle, Mike Hunchback, Stupid Party, Shellshag and This Bike Is A Pipebomb were on the bill at Maxwell's. A pretty good list and actually dirt cheap considering there's 5 bands in total.

Mike played some death defying vocals in my ears and it also reminded me of the NJ punk scene. The crowd was pretty much okay at this point. UK band Let's Wrestle, who are also playing several shows in Brooklyn, including a show with POBH, (which btw I will missed) and several SXSW shows were next. First thing I notice is at this point the crowd is dead. Ha. I don't know why NJ crowd sucks unless someone is playing punk or hardcore. Not a lot of love from NJ. Let's Wrestle eventually charmed the crowd with their witty lyrics.

Well we all know, Shellshag always throw a good show so I will leave it at that but for the rest I missed them. Next time maybe?

Francis M (Francis Magalona) died today March 6,2009. He died at a young age of 44. An amazing individual, who is also an a photographer, artist and musician.

I am still in shock and mourning of this sad lost. I feel the sadness from the difficulty and the physical battle one must fight for. I sad encounter we might have experienced, maybe by ourselves or our loves ones.

He made this wonderful song way back in 1994.

The thing about Love is they have the most badass soundsystem in the city. A fucking badass soundsystem and dub music, is like a sweet vacation in the jungle. Dubwar is a monthly dub night in the city with amazing DJs playing the grimiest shit.

As seen on pictures above, crowd going crazy! 2562 from the Netherlands and Starkey from Philly throwing good stuff to the crowd. I'm new to dubstep and I like it a lot but I think the crowd that night was whack! Way too crowded and I'm not really sure if half of the people there were into the music.

Finally, I'm back with some photos! Blank Dogs is just so fucking good live. No Compass and Poison Ivy are probably my favorites songs. They have been playing shows quite a lot lately, a better news than them or rather him not playing any show at all. Definitely the distorded/lo-fi vocals from the records are amazing, unfortunately it's not the same live. Still Blank Dog throws some sweet vocals in just rather different goodness. I just remembered some interesting opinion about him from a musically inclined individual and I must say fuck you. Vivian Girls, Wavves and Woods are all great bands but none of them is greater than the other. I do prefer Blank Dogs thou. Hopefully Mike, will play Poison Ivy live next time as he said he would:)

I just realized that both bands have the initials of BD. Blank Dog, Black Dice, Blank Dice, Black Dog, what else? This is actually my first time watching Black Dice live so I can't really compare that much besides from what they used to play in their first record, Lambs like Fruits. It's basically the same on wikipedia, from hardcore days to dub jungle sound. The stuff they played live was really catchy and I think most of the people in the show were there for Black Dice. Highlight of the night guy dancing crazy and me drinking a half full plastic cup of whiskey.

N(N) and Mihara FW 09

The Number (N)ine collection is definitely sex. I can see myself in a dusted hotel room in Alaska wearing that shit. People will probably think this looks like some cosplay / theater fiasco but if you look closely to the details and styling it's pretty rad. On another note, this is kinda like men's version of Undercover "Guruguru" collection and maybe add some old N(N) concept.
Probably the pictures above have been in posted on blogs alot, the one's below, I'm not sure.

I think Mihara is like under the shadow of N(N)in terms of recognition. They are both great but I think Mihara is amazing. Shit you can wear outside your house. I feel this collection is like bimbimbap with the veggies as Raf, Rick, Ann D and N(N).
